Zohran Mamdani has message for Trump after winning election

It’s official — Zohran Mamdani has been elected the new mayor of New York City, and he didn’t waste time sending a pointed message to former President Donald Trump.

The 34-year-old Democratic socialist secured a historic victory on November 5, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani’s win makes him New York’s first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian descent, first born in Africa, and youngest mayor in over a century.

Representing Queens in the state assembly, Mamdani captured more than 50 percent of the vote. Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40 percent, while Sliwa trailed with a little more than 7 percent, according to The Guardian.

When he officially takes office on January 1, Mamdani will lead New York as its most progressive mayor in generations.

Mamdani’s Defiant Victory Speech

In his passionate victory address, Mamdani embraced his identity and beliefs without apology, saying:

“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this.”

He continued,

“New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change. I will wake up each morning with a singular purpose: to make this city better for you than it was the day before.”

Turning his attention to Donald Trump, the new mayor declared:

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.
If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.
This is not only how we stop Trump. It’s how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: ‘Turn the volume up.’”

Trump Responds to Mamdani’s Win

Donald Trump, who has long opposed Mamdani’s candidacy, appeared to respond soon after the election results. On his social media platform Truth Social, he wrote:

“…AND SO IT BEGINS!”

While that’s all he’s said so far, political observers expect more exchanges between the two as their feud continues.

A New Chapter for New York Politics

In his speech, Mamdani also addressed his Democratic rival, saying:

“I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life, but let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and serves only the few.”

According to the New York City Board of Elections, voter turnout was the highest for a mayoral race in over 50 years, with more than two million New Yorkers casting their ballots.

Ambitious Plans for the City’s Future

Mamdani’s proposed policies include the city’s first universal childcare program, free public bus service, and a rent freeze for one million tenants.

To fund these initiatives, CNN reports that he has suggested taxing the city’s wealthiest residents and raising corporate tax rates.

With a bold vision and historic mandate, Zohran Mamdani’s victory marks a transformative moment for New York City — one that could reshape the political and social landscape of America’s largest metropolis.
