Prince William has spoken candidly about the heartbreaking loss of his family’s beloved dog, Lupo, during a rare and personal moment on camera.
The Prince of Wales appeared on a special episode of the Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler, hosted by Schitt’s Creek star Eugene Levy. During the episode, filmed at Windsor Castle, William gave Levy a private tour of the gardens — and the pair were joined by the family’s current dog, Orla, a black Cocker Spaniel.
As Levy offered Orla a treat, the prince joked, “This is going down well, look, you’re getting the look which is like, ‘please feed me.’”
The lighthearted moment soon turned emotional when William revealed that Orla is actually related to Lupo, the Cocker Spaniel he and Princess Kate lost in 2020.
“So [Orla’s] actually the niece of our other dog, Lupo, who sadly we lost in lockdown,” William explained.
Levy gently asked if the family had been there when it happened. “Yeah, we were all there sadly,” William replied. “It was very sad.”
Lupo had been part of the Wales family since 2011, a gift from Kate’s younger brother, James Middleton, after the royal couple’s wedding. The dog quickly became a cherished companion to William, Kate, and their growing family, often appearing in official photos — including those taken after Prince George’s birth.
When Lupo died in November 2020, the couple paid tribute to him on social media, writing alongside a photo of him in the snow:
“Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much.”
Messages of sympathy poured in from royal fans around the world. “My thoughts and prayers go to all of you! Lupo was very loved and will be missed,” one wrote. Others called him “a precious pup” and “part of the family.”
A year later, in 2021, the family welcomed Orla — Lupo’s niece — into their home. Her name was revealed publicly the following year, when she appeared alongside Princess Charlotte in her seventh birthday portrait.

Earlier this year, Orla became a mother herself. Kensington Palace marked Prince William’s 43rd birthday in June with a photo of the royal beaming beside three of Orla’s puppies — a picture that quickly melted hearts online.
“Beautiful picture. Happy birthday to the Prince of Wales,” one fan commented, while another added, “This is now my favorite photo of Prince William.”
Through laughter and loss, Orla has clearly brought new life and joy to the Wales household — continuing the special legacy of the family’s beloved Lupo.
