Princess Diana’s feelings on whether Prince Harry could become king instead of William

Princess Diana once felt that Prince Harry was “better equipped to be king” than his older brother William, according to a royal commentator.

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is next in line after King Charles and has long been aware of his destiny as Britain’s future monarch. Yet Diana reportedly believed her younger son would have made the stronger choice for the crown.

Nicknames Diana Gave Her Sons

In a conversation with Slingo, royal expert Charles Rae shared details about the special nicknames Diana used for her boys.

“Diana dubbed Harry GKH (Good King Harry) because she thought he would have been better equipped for the role as a future king,” Rae explained. The princess also used the affectionate title to “make Harry feel that extra special.”

William had his own set of nicknames as well. Rae revealed: “Both she [Diana] and Charles referred to William as Wombat when he was much younger.” That particular name reportedly came directly from Diana.

Is Harry Still Eligible to Become King?

Despite stepping back as a senior royal in 2020 alongside Meghan Markle, Prince Harry remains in the official line of succession. While he and Meghan no longer perform royal duties and no longer use their HRH titles in a professional capacity, they are still part of the royal family.

At present, Harry is fifth in line to the throne, behind his brother William and William’s three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Should King Charles step down or pass away, William would immediately ascend the throne. If William were to abdicate or die unexpectedly, the crown would pass first to George, then Charlotte, and then Louis. Harry would only inherit the crown if all four ahead of him were removed from succession.

In such an unlikely scenario, Harry would become king, with Meghan serving as queen consort. However, as George matures and eventually has children of his own, Harry’s place in line will naturally move further down, making the possibility even more remote.
