The relationship between King Charles and Prince Harry has long been a subject of public scrutiny.
Since Harry’s move to the United States and his accusations of mistreatment from the royal establishment, it has been evident that the father–son bond has suffered deep fractures.
Tensions only intensified after Harry’s brief visit to see his father following Charles’ cancer diagnosis in February 2024. That reunion reportedly lasted less than an hour, fueling speculation of avoidance, conflicting priorities, and Prince William’s resistance to reconciliation.
While Harry has expressed his hope for mending ties, a former royal butler has now suggested that distrust may be the biggest barrier preventing Charles from welcoming his son back.
Why King Charles Reportedly Distrusts Harry
Grant Harrold, who served as Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011, has offered his perspective in his new book The Royal Butler.
According to Harrold, Harry’s own words and actions are the root cause of the strained relationship.
“The king doesn’t trust Harry, because of what Harry has said. He worried that he would use it to his advantage. And he has,” Harrold told Page Six. “They were all so close, and to see that relationship completely destroyed, I do not see them coming back from it.”
Harrold appeared to be referring to Harry’s explosive memoir Spare, as well as the Netflix series Harry & Meghan, where the couple openly shared details about their time as working royals.
The former butler also argued that Harry and Meghan’s willingness to engage with the media has made a reunion almost impossible.
“If they reconcile, then fall out again, what’s to say there won’t be another book, Netflix series or interview about it?” he asked.
Meghan Markle’s Role in Harry’s Changing Relationships
Harrold further suggested that Meghan’s arrival was the turning point in Harry’s relationships, particularly with Prince William.
“As soon as Meghan came into his life, everything changed,” Harrold claimed. “The biggest change in Harry’s life is Meghan.”
Harry on Sibling Dynamics
Harry himself recently gave a rare comment on sibling relationships during the 2025 WellChild Awards. While speaking with a 17-year-old award recipient who mentioned having a younger brother, Harry asked: “Does he drive you mad?”
When the teen replied that he got along well with his sibling, Harry laughed and said: “You know what, siblings.” He then added that sharing a school with a brother can sometimes “make it more challenging.”
The remarks seemed to allude to his own experiences with William when both attended Eton College, though in different years.
Rumors of a Possible Reunion
Speculation continues about whether Charles, William, and Harry might reunite soon. The Sun has reported that King Charles has returned to London after spending the summer at Balmoral, just as Harry is expected to visit.
While no plans have been confirmed, Harry earlier told the BBC: “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious.”
